What is the AskThis widget?
A one-minute primer: what AskThis adds to your site, how the AI-share buttons work, and why it's built to stay invisible until someone shares.
AskThis is a free share widget for the AI era. You drop one script tag on your site and it adds a row of share buttons to your pages — the familiar social ones and a new kind: “Ask AI” buttons that send a visitor into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and more, carrying a ready-made, source-citing prompt about the page they’re on.
The two kinds of buttons
- Social share — Facebook, X, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Reddit, Copy link, and ~20 more. The classic “share this page” behavior your visitors already expect.
- Ask AI — instead of just linking your page, these open an AI engine with a prompt built from your page (“Summarize this article and cite the source…”). The visitor gets a useful answer that points back to you.
Why the AI buttons matter
People increasingly ask an AI instead of searching or clicking. An “Ask AI” button meets them there — turning a passive reader into someone who pulls your content into their AI conversation, with your page cited as the source.
Built to stay out of your way
The widget is deliberately lightweight and self-contained:
- One script tag, zero dependencies — no framework, no build step.
- Under 12 KB and loaded
async, so it never slows your page down. - Isolated in a Shadow DOM — its styles can’t leak into your site and your CSS can’t break it.
- Fails silently — if anything ever goes wrong it simply doesn’t render, rather than throwing an error on your page.
The prompts shown to visitors are pre-generated and cached, so clicking a button is instant — the widget never waits on an AI model while someone’s on your page.
What you get back
Every share and “Ask AI” click flows into your dashboard as analytics — including a unique AI Intent Score that measures how much your content is pulling people toward AI engines. That’s the signal social buttons alone can’t show you.
The widget itself is free. Paid plans and add-ons (deeper analytics, Citation Monitor, white-label, and more) build on top of it.
