AI Graph tags

The ai:* meta tags that tell AI engines how to read and cite your page — and how AskThis generates them.

AI Graph tags are meta tags — like Open Graph, but for answer engines. They tell AI how to read and cite your page. AskThis generates them for you; this explains what they mean.

<meta property="ai:type" content="article">
<meta property="ai:summary" content="A step-by-step pour-over method using a 1:16 ratio.">
<meta property="ai:cite_as" content="Craft & Quill">
<meta property="ai:allow" content="summarize,cite,compare">

The everyday tags

Tag Purpose
ai:type What the page is: article · product · business · service · saas · recipe · event · profile
ai:summary Your one-sentence summary — the answer you want models to use
ai:cite_as The name to attach to citations
ai:allow Uses you welcome: summarize, cite, compare (comma-joined)

How AskThis generates them

  • The onboarding scan reads your key pages and proposes tags per page.
  • Review and edit under Prompts → AI Graph in the dashboard.
  • The WordPress and Shopify plugins inject approved tags into your <head> automatically.
  • On a custom stack, copy the generated tags into your page templates — they must be server-rendered, since crawlers don’t reliably run JavaScript.

Writing a good ai:summary

Describe what’s actually on the page in one or two concrete sentences; skip superlatives. Models cross-check the summary against the page content — inflated metadata reads as spam.

Validate & go deeper

Run the free AI score against any URL to check your tags are present, well-formed, and consistent with the page. The full standard — all 20 tags and governance — lives at askthis.dev/standard; the day-to-day reference is in the developer docs.
